BC Summer Games are in Abbotsford this year!

Horse Council BC athletes, families, coaches, member clubs, and discipline organizations,

I would like to wish you all the best for 2016 as you roll out your yearly training and competition season.

Youth Athletes competing in 1.10m Jumpers, Dressage First Level, Vaulting Division D Canter or Para Equestrian Dressage who are between the ages of 11 and 18, (13-30 for Para) are eligible to represent their Zones in Equestrian Sport at the BC Summer Games Abbotsford 2016 from July 21 – 24, 2016. Athlete Declarations are coming in from all over BC. The qualifying period started April 1st, 2015, and ends on June 1st, 2016. We are very fortunate to have Nancy Olson Beaulieu serving as Equestrian Sport Chair, the role responsible for managing the overall competition of all disciplines and venue requirements. Nancy has organized a great team of volunteers to manage the competition for each discipline. Our ever keen and capable Ali Buchanan is providing technical support in the office to ensure all participants are properly qualified and registered.

The qualifying criteria for each discipline is included in the “Technical Package” which provides specifications for qualification and Zone Team selection. All information as it is officially confirmed for Equestrian sport can be found on the HCBC website www.hcbc.ca at the following webpage link:

Each provincial zone has a designated NCCP Certified Head Coach / Zone Representative who can assist answering questions for athletes and parents that may wish to participate in the BC Summer Games in Abbottsford 2016.

The Games experience is like no other Equestrian competition that you will have participated in so far. It is a model like senior Olympic Games for youth in BC. Opening and closing ceremonies, interacting with youth in a multi-sport environment, podium moments both individually and for Zone teams are all part of the BC Games experience. One horse, one class per day over 3 days of competition is only one part of the BC Summer Games experience. How easy is that compared to your average horse show! You will be able to make friends and cheer for your team members in other disciplines, and have opportunities to meet and watch athletes in a number of different sports compete as well. The BC Summer Games organizing committee offers several fun and social events as well as the competitions during the Games.

If you are a Horse Council BC member between the ages of 11 and 18 in 2016 you are eligible to qualify and Declare for the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford 2016, or perhaps you will be ready to compete at the level required in time for the BC Summer Games 2018, to be held in Duncan on Vancouver Island. Perhaps you should attend this year in Abbotsford as a spectator or volunteer to experience the excitement of the multi-sport Games and see how exciting this once in a lifetime experience can be.

This is also a great opportunity for coaches and officials to develop and understand how the BC Games experience differs from regular competition. Please share this information and encourage our Youth Athletes who may be eligible to qualify and compete, either by offering qualifying classes at a local competitions, volunteering at the BC Summer Games, or providing parent and coach support to a young athlete you may know.

Sincerely,

Susan Harrison
