Nine Mile Ridge

Back Country Trail
Nine Mile Ridge is in the Shulaps Range. If the Spruce Lake area is the hub of the Chilcotin area; the Shulaps is one of the spokes and the Nine Mile Ridge area is one of the nipples on the spoke. It is a remote area where it is said there are more grizzly bears then there are people. This protected area lies approximately 150 km north of Whistler and 95 km west of Lillooet. The horse trail along Nine Mile Ridge is accessible from both the Yalakom River and from South French Bar creek. It passes over a height-of-land at Gunsight Pass. There are spectacular views of the Shulaps range, Blue Creek, Yalakom Mountain, and Nine Mile Ridge itself.

Either Trailhead. If packing in, the vicinity of Gunsight pass has several suitable locations to camp with horses.
From the Yalakom trailhead, the trail is well marked and travels steeply up the mountain on the right (Northeast) side of the road. Warning - the trail from here is extremely steep for about 1 or 2 hours. Fit horses and some experience riding in mountains is highly recommended. From the South French Bar Trailhead: Park/camp at the trailhead and ride a furthur 1/2 km or so along the main road to an old road joining on the left. Follow this road to a cabin at the junction of Mosquito creek and South French Bar creek. ( Tip - you can drive a 4wd to this cabin . If packing in and horses are not fit or to save them some work, drive 1 vehicle with pack gear to the cabin and load horses there.) Continue past the cabin, the road gradually narrows, crosses the creek, and becomes a trail following the Mosquito creek drainage to it's head at Gunsight Pass.

Access from Pemberton is via the Hurley Forest Service Road to Gold Bridge (this road climbs steeply to 1,850 meters and can be very rough) or from Lillooet along Carpenter Lake. About 10km west of Gold Bridge, a logging road is traveled for approximately 12km to the start of the Gun Creek/Spruce Lake Trail at Jewel Creek. The protected area may also be accessed by the southeast side via logging and mining roads. Many of these roads require a four-wheel drive vehicle. It is a 69 km drive east from Gun Creek, to the head of the Yalakom FSR. It is then another hard 43 km on logging road to the Nine Mile Ridge trailhead. South French Bar Trailhead: From Lillooet take the West Pavilion F.S. road. The South French Bar Creek bridge is at approx 101 km. Yalakom Trailhead: Take the Bridge River road to the Yalakom fork. Travel the Yalakom to approx 51.073175 N 122.509730 W where there is a good overnight campsite on the left and a small creek crossing the road. Lat/Long @ Trailheads: South French Bar Trailhead - 51.175994 N 122.258143 W Mosquito Creek Cabin - 51.150309 N 122.328061 W Yalakom Trailhead - (approx) 51.073175 N 122.509730 W
