Chemainus River Provincial Park

Provincial Park
Surrounded by a buffer of mature, second-growth forest, Chemainus River Park is home to Roosevelt elk, who use the river as a corridor, and black bears, cougars and wolves, who forage along the riverbanks. The river is home to coho salmon and steelhead. Found in the river above Copper Canyon, the steelhead are a spring “race” with a summer run. Since all steelhead are stopped at the canyon, the deep pools of the upper river are ideally suited to the production of steelhead. The river also has numerous sensitive ecosystems related to the floodplain and riparian vegetation.

Re: Directions posted on: 10 / 09 / 2014

Thank you for posting that the directions were incorrect. They've been removed, and if anyone is able to provide detailed driving directions that would be greatly appreciated. The description of the steelhead pools came directly from the BC Parks webpage specifically about the Chemainus River Provincial Park. If you would like to read more about the park and all of its features, check out http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/chemainus_rv/

The directioons are for getting to Cowichan River Trail, NOT Chemainus. I suspect the description of the steelhead pools may be Cowichan River as well. Note that riding along the old railbed / Trans Canada trail is great, riding on the Cowichan River foot trail is not allowed, and is far too rugged in many places for safe riding.
