Kilby Historic Site at Lower Harrison and Fraser Rivers

Day Ride Trail
Update as of 2023 Public including horses are not allowed past the old Harrison Mill as it is Reservation Land along the Dyke and River. It is Private land past the Reservation on the River. At the moment we are still able to ride along Kilby Beach and Dyke in the off season When the rivers are low, as in February, the Harrison River has some wide sandy beaches which are very pleasant. Heading back towards the road bridge from the parking area, there are sandy beaches with some nice logs to jump, but watch for very soft spots - the firmest ground of course closest to the shore. The sand ends at a steep hill with an old cabin at its base. Riding back and towards the Fraser under the railway bridge and to the junction of the two rivers, when the beach ends go up onto the dike for a few hundred yards then you can drop down onto a trail that runs alongside the Fraser. Go back onto the dike when that trail ends at a gate, and if you're so inclined you can keep going for a considerable distance to end on a sandy island in the river, returning the same way or along Kilby Road which is quiet at this time of year. This is an excellent winter's day ride - the rivers are usually up by the end of April by which time the boat trailers are using the car park and there are lots of people using the beach in that immediate area. The Kilby Historic Site has hosted many riding groups, even fox runs, and their suggestion would be to call if there is a group planning a ride. They expect the horses to be in control at all times and that the animals are cleaned up after

Best on the off season or it is very busy with boaters and campers. Contact: Jo-Anne Leon at the Kilby Historic Site: phone 604-796-9576 or e-mail [email protected]

Drive on the Loughheed Highway east to the Harrison River Bridge and take the first right onto School Road (follow signs to Kilby). At the end of School Road turn right onto Kilby Road, pass the museum and store and take the first right, a narrow little road, which leads to a camp ground and boat launch. Go over the dike and head to the left into the parking area for vehicles and boat trailers. Often in winter the river is so low that the end of the boat launch is quite a distance from the water so there is no competition for space.

Checked it out today. Best to park at the store, I asked. But only go here in the off season. Narrow roads, smaller rigs can get into the campground if not busy or the boat launch....? But there is a fee. Very short loop ride along the beach to the north then back on the dyke. Didn't go back towards the Fraser. That sounds the better ride!
