From Whatcom Road N. of Hwy 1, take the N. Parallel Rd./Edlridge Rd. to just N. of Atkinson to park at Mackay Creek Park. For a loop ride, ride east, follow the TCT signs over the bridge, then back from MacDonald Park to another bridge. Longer dyke rides past the MacDonald Park trailhead. There are washrooms and a picnic area at MacDonald Park on the Sumas River Dyke Trail at the end of Number 3 Road. From there you can ride east or west on the dyke. East follows the TCT and dyke to the Vedder Canal and back again. When the river is low you can go under the bridge and go all the way to Yarrow. To get to the MacDonald Park trailhead use the #1 Highway and take the #3 Rd exit to Cultus lake but go northwest back over the freeway (coming from the west). Drive up over the dyke and there is the parking lot. Covered picnic area, lots of picnic tables, washroom and lots of room for rigs. Easy flat trail, 3 bridges to cross, hikers, dog walkers, runners bikes and tons of birds to identify. Follow the South Sumas River Dyke east to Barrowtown (8.3 km). Just before Barrowtown, it will be necessary to follow North Parallel Road. (Note that Barrowtown is a pump station controlling the levels of water in the Sumas River. This reminds us that much of the reclaimed farmland south of here was once the huge Sumas Lake.) To get to the Sumas Vedder Trail, first follow the Sumas River Dike eastward to the Vedder Canal Dyke. Follow the Vedder Canal Dyke by dipping under the Trans Canada Highway to the Keith Wilson Bridge and cross over to Chilliwack. Should the section under the Highway be flooded, it will be necessary to go back to Number 3 Road along the North Parallel Road and work your way to the Keith Wilson Bridge by following the signs to Chilliwack. If you are heading west and you can see at Keith Wilson Bridge that the track along the river below the dyke is flooded head to Number 3 Road at the first opportunity and go over the Highway overpass to the North Parallel Road. Then backtrack going east until you see a Trans Canada Trail sign on your left (north side of the road). This puts you back on the Sumas River dyke system.

To start on the north side of the river, park at McKay Creek Park. See also the listing for MacDonald Park, which is another trailhead on the south side. It is accessed East of Abbotsford (off Highway #1), foot of No. 3 Road W. of Hwy.
