Back Country Trail
Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park is one of Canada's largest and most significant parks and is considered the "Serengeti of the North. True wilderness atmosphere, outstanding scenery and varied terrain make this park an excellent place for quality hiking, photography, and nature study. Lands within the park have an excellent capability for supporting large populations of wildlife. A Letter of Permission is required for individuals or groups who wish to use horses within Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Provincial Park. To obtain a Letter of Permission, please contact the BC Parks Stikine Area Office at (250) 771-4591. Horses must be fed only with certified weed-free pellets for 72 hours before entering the park and throughout your stay. Go to BC Parks website for more info. https://bcparks.ca/spatsizi-plateau-wilderness-park/ Ideal month is August - Trip difficulty is advanced as it requires trail fining in many areas and traverse remote country. The trail covers all types of terrain, including extensive bog in wet years. Recommend Tania Millen's book: Pack 'em Up, Ride 'em Out. She describes her 9 day pack trip into this area.

Wilderness camping is allowed in Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park. The term ‘wilderness camping’ refers to camping in a backcountry area with no facilities. Other backcountry camping areas in the park offer some very basic facilities.
McEwan Trail: This trail leads off the railgrade at the 28km marker. It leads through Stikine River Provincial park and into Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Provincial Park near the north boundary of the park. It then crosses Cullivan Creek and heads south toward Bug Lake and then on to Cold Fish Lake camp. The trail is approximately 54 km long, and takes 4-5 days to hike to Cold Fish Lake camp. This trail can have muddy and boggy sections that can be difficult, especially in wet weather. It is recommended that persons bringing horses into the park use this trail rather than the Eaglenest trail.
