Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park

Back Country Trail
Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park comprises almost 112,000 hectares of unique landscape in the West Chilcotin Uplands. The landscape boasts volcanic landforms, the largest herd of woodland caribou in southern British Columbia and the northernmost California bighorn sheep in North America. This Park was created to conserve the unique ecology of two small mountain ranges - the Itcha Mountains in the east and the Ilgachuz Mountains in the west. The area is popular in Sept for hunters on horseback, bugs are horrendous in July. There are numerous outfitters in the area for horseback tours and guided hiking.

There are two cabins located near Itcha Lake for public use. They hold approximately. 6 people each and are very rustic. Be prepared to camp outside if cabins are full. Cabins are maintained by the Itcha Cabin Society. Campsites have been established over time by area users, and grazing, water and fire rings are located at each site.
Unmaintained horse trails exist throughout the park. Check out Tania Millen's book - Pack em Up, Ride em Out for info on her pack trip into the Itcha's. Tania's trip was an out-and-rerturn ride that follows the Baezaeko River west into the meadows and subalpine areas north of Itcha Mtn. This trip is suitable for novice horse pack trip riders with some backcountry skills; however intermediate skills are useful for crossing soft areas and finding trail through meadows. When planning a trip into the park check with BC Parks regarding: trail and access road conditions, river water levels, public access to cabins and current fire restrictions.

Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park is located in the Chilcotin Uplands east of the Rainbow Range of South Tweedsmuir Park. The park is extremely remote and unroaded. The closest major centre is Quesnel, located approximately 200km east of the park. There are several ways to get into the Park, however, there isn't an obvious trail system connecting the west (Ilgachus) and east (Itcha) portions of the park. Travellers generally access either the Itchas or Ilgachuz via separate trails and routes.
