McKay Lake Forest Trails - Spruston

The 87.4 trail system has 74 named, mapped and carded trails. These trails are used by a variety of recreation users - walkers, bikers and quad users as well as being very popular for equestrians.

There are 3 lakes - Mckay, Crystal and Timberlands, along with Nanaimo River and Haslam Creek. No water in camp, but many creeks on the trails.
Parking within the fenced, gated and locked Spruston Rec Site. Limited car or horse trailer parking on the Forestry service road.
See information on the Spruston Rec site. Must be a member of BCHBC to obtain the lock combination. There are 20 corrals, 2 pit toilets, manure pit with wheelbarrow, and a fire pit.
You can ride north, south, east and west from site and can access TCT to Ladysmith or our next parking area at Timberlands. 74 Mapped, maintained and named trails by the Central Vancouver Island Chapter of BCHBC on Crown land and Mosaic forest land. The Trans Canada Trail (TCT) traverses these trails.

You can access Spruston Road from Highway 1, just north of the Nanaimo Airport, BUT from only the southbound lane. Turn right and be careful going around the immediate one lane only sharp corner with the mirror. Honk your horn. Active industrial road. If you are coming from the South, go past the Airport, over the Haslam green metal bridge, over the Nanaimo River bridge, immediately after that bridge take next exit on right at Nanaimo Lakes/South Wellington, immediately take the right hand curve that goes under the highway, You will then head northwest you will see sign for Hwy 1 South, over the tracks. You are now on South Wellington heading back down to the Highway. NOTE is not a merge - you will need to stop and enter the Highway.
