Back Country Trail
Big Creek Prov. Park is bounded to the west by the mountains and lakes of the Taseko and Nemiah Valleys, to the north by forested Crown and private lands of the Chilcotin Plateau, and to the east by Gang Ranch cattle country. Big Creek is generally accessed from the north and is located 70 km south of Hanceville. Big Creek Park is a popular destination for horseback riding, but because of the park’s remoteness, visitors must be experienced in backcountry travel and completely self-sufficient. Please use only weed-free pelleted feed for horses, since import of weeds is a major concern in the park. From the trailhead, once on horseback, continue 2.5 km past the gate into Big Creek Prov. Park and turn right onto an old trail. The trail follows Big Creek south for approx. 28 km to Graveyard Cabin and camp. The trails of Big Creek Park are unmaintained and most are rough. Creek crossings may be impossible during high water. This is a remote wilderness. Tell a reliable person of your trip plans and your expected return time. Grizzly bears inhabit the park. Please read and follow all precautions for safe travel in grizzly country. Accessing the park involves travel on active logging roads. Drive at your own risk. Roads become very slippery following rain, and washouts may result. Please use headlights at all times, and carry chains and a shovel even during summer. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. From Williams Lake, drive 96 km west along Highway 20 to Hanceville. At Hanceville turn south on Fletcher Lake rd, cross the Chilcotin River via a series of switchbacks and drive 28 km to the community of Big Creek. From Big Creek, turn left (east) on 2000 Road and drive 12 km to the junction with Mons Gaspard Creek FSR (2400 Road). Turn right (south) and drive approximately. 32 km on the main road to a green gate. This is the trailhead.
